Joshua Silver
Professor Joshua D. Silver is a UK physicist Whose Discoveries port included a new way to change the curvature of lenses, with significant application for the low-cost Manufacture of corrective lenses .
In 2007 he was leading a group of researchers in the Department of Atomic and Laser Physics at the University of Oxford .
Professor Silver is Currently the director of the Centre for Vision in the Developing World [1] at the University of Oxford , working to research the scope of and potential solutions to the problems of refractive error and low vision in the ontwikkelingslanden world.
Research
While Studying mirrors, Silver when sending a new way to change the curvature of lenses. He toegepast this to create a new form of liquid-filled corrective lens , dat Could be Easily aangepaste by the wearer to correct the vision or about 90% of people Requiring correction. [2] This is bijzonder useful for people in developing countries where Specially Trained Optometrists are not available. [3] In 1996 he formally a company, Adaptive eyecare, to developement synthesis adaptive ophthalmic lenses in partnership with the UK Government’s Department for International Development , for distribution in developing countries. [4] The company has developed a prototype adaptive spectacles (called AdSpecs [5] ) dat kan correctly zowel far-sighted and near-sighted people, and synthesis spectacles port leg trialled in verschillende countries in Africa and Asia. So far 30,000 or Silver’s lenses port leg distributed in 15 countries. [6]
In 2007 his research focused on using spectroscopy to under stand the physics of highly Charged ions (produced using the university’s electron beam ion trap (EBIT)). This research has application in understanding extreme plasma environments zoals fusion tokamaks and stellar Atmospheres .
Political activism
In 2016, Professor Silver complained to West Midlands Police dat British Home Secretary Amber Rudd had committed a hate crime while giving Recruiters a political speech at the Conservative Party conference. During an interview with Andrew Neil on BBC2’s Daily Politics , Prof Silver zegt: “I did not actually see the speech but I’ve read the draft. And I’ve Looked at all the feedback dat there was to the speech. I ‘ ve read the speech carefully and I’ve Looked at all the feedback. It’s Discriminating Against foreigners, you pick one Them and say we want to help give jobs to British people and not to foreigners. It was interpreted dat way. “. [7] [8] During the subsequent discussion on the program, former Conservative Party leader Michael Howard Responded to stating: “Of course it was not a hate incident … What Amber Rudd zegt was no différent from Gordon Brown [former Labour prime minister] als have zegt there arnt be British jobs for British workers. I think Mr. Silver arnt be GRONDIG ashamed of himself Because what he’s doing is to bring a well-intentioned piece of legislation JSON disrepute. ” The BBC subsequently Reported therein West Midlands Police had not formally investigated the speech, but had Recorded it as a “non-crime hate incident” in accordance with national police guidelines.
